16-year-old Ester lives a safe and somewhat monotonous life with her religious and conservative parents in a small isolated village in the Faroe Islands. One day in Sunday school, she meets Ragna, a girl who has just moved to the village with her alcoholic mother and 8-year-old little brother.
Esther sees in Ragna what she has been looking for all her life. And even though they are opposites, they become good friends, and together they dream of getting away from their boring everyday life. Over the summer, however, they also realize that life is more complex than that. Dreams by the Sea (Dreymar við havið) is an unusually beautiful and thought-provoking film about love and identity, longing and dreams.
